Fun at Futaba! ♪双葉小学校♪

Hello everyone! Just for a change of pace, I think I'll try writing in English today ^^
Don't panic though! I'll include a Japanese translation though, so try reading and understanding the English first and then check to see if you were right by reading the English.
みなさん、こんにちは！今日はいつもと違って、英語で書いてみます。
しかし、焦る必要はありません！日本語の訳もちゃんとつけますので、まずは英文の方を読んでみてください。その後、訳を読んで自分の理解が合っているかどうかを確かめてください。


On Thursday, I had the lucky chance to go and visit Michael at Futaba Elementary School. Have you ever been out to Futaba? It's a little bit "out in the sticks", but it is a beautiful school. Apparently the school building is shaped like a swan!
Inside the building, the hallways and rooms and bright and spacious, and the wooden architecture is relaxing to the eye. It was such a happy and soothing place, I wish I could visit it more often! I'm jealous of Michael　＞＜；
木曜日は、マイケル先生が働く双葉小学校を訪れる機会に恵まれました。皆さんは、双葉小学校に行ったことがあります？「ちょっと」町中から離れていますが、とても綺麗な学校です。話によると、校舎が「白鳥」の形をしています！建物の中に入ってみると、廊下や教室がすべて広広として明るいし、木造の建築が正に「目の保養」です。気分が晴れて落ち着く場所なので、もっと行きたいなと思いました。マイケル先生がうらやまし～＞＜；



We had a class with the very energetic grade 5 kids.
First, I showed everyone a few pictures of Australia.
Beautiful beaches (where I'm from!), more beaches, desert (very hot!), rainforest... and a snowy mountain.
The kids were all suprised to see the photo of the mountain. But actually, we have some pretty good ski mountains in Australia. We even got 2 gold medals in the winter olympics!
After that, we talked about the differences in schools in Australia and Japan.
In Australia, we don't normally have "school lunches" so everyone either brings their lunch to school in a lunchbox or buys lunch from the canteen. Also, a lot of schools have a school uniform.
Two of the kids volunteered to model the uniforms for us!
その日は、とってもゲンキな５年生の授業をしました。
まず、オーストラリアの写真を見せました。
美しいビーチ（僕の出身地！）、砂漠（熱い）、またビーチ、熱帯雨林・・・そして、雪山。
雪山の写真が出てくると、子どもたちは皆びっくりしました。しかし、実際オーストラリアではスキーができるいい山がいつくかあります。この間の冬オリンピックで金メダルを（珍しく）２つも獲得しました！

その後は、日本の学校とオーストラリアの学校の違いを話しました。
オーストラリアでは小学校から制服がある学校は多いです。
早速モデルさんになってもらいました！
They were a bit shy, but said it was "fun!" trying on the uniforms.
少し照れくさかったようですが、感想は「たのしい！」でした。
After that, we all made little koala origami!
その後は、コアラの折り紙をみんなでやりました！
You may have noticed, the English word for "折り紙" is "origami"! Exactly the same! There are actually a lot of "loanwords" from Japanese in the English language. Sushi, udon, soba, sumo, samurai, origami.... even tsunami! Did you know that?
英文を読んでいれば、折り紙＝origamiに気付いた方がいると思います。英語が日本語と一緒です！英語には、こういう日本語からの「外来語」がたくさんありますよ。すし、うどん、そば、相撲、侍、折り紙・・・そして、津波も！皆さん、知っていましたか？

The girls koalas were very cute! Nice drawing!
クラスの女子が作ったコアラ達がとてもかわいかったです！さすが！


The boys koalas were ... scary!! Gangster koalas?~^^;
そして、男子のコアラは・・・・・・こわっ！！コアラ不良＾＾；

But of course, you all know about koalas and kangaroos. They are very famous animals.
Have you heard of leopard cats and ibex? How about shetland ponies or serow?
Michael taught us all about some "lesser known" but very interesting animals!
しかし、コアラやカンガルーのことなら、皆さんも知っていますよね。とても有名な動物です。
じゃ・・・レパード・キャットとか、アイベックスは？それとも、シェトランド・ポニーや、セローは？
その日、マイケル先生は「あまり知られていない」けどとても面白い動物の紹介をしてくれました！


The children all tried to match up each exotic animal with the country it comes from.
It wasn't easy!! But of course everyone knew "serow" because they live in Akita!
If you want to know the other answers, then try looking them up on the internet.
子ども達は、動物とその国を当ててみました。とても難しかった！
しかし、セローは秋田に住んでいるから簡単でした。そうです、セローは「かもしか」です！

I was happy that the kids were so energetic, and they were interested in everything we had to say. If they keep that interest in foreign countries and cultures then we might see them heading to Australia in a few years on our annual exchange program.
Their futures are as bright as the cheerful wooden buildings they are studying in.

子ども達がすごく元気で、マイケル先生と僕の話していることすべてに対して興味を示してくれたので、とても嬉しかったです。外国や異文化への興味をそのまま保っていれば、数年後にはもしかすると大仙市の恒例オーストラリア派遣事業の参加者になるかもしれません。
双葉小学校の子ども達の将来は、木造の校舎と同じようにとても明るいと思います。
双葉小学校の皆さん、楽しい授業と楽しい一日をありがとうございました！
