I'm sure you have all heard about the partnership program between Daisen City and Akita International University (AIU). It's a great system where middle schools, primary schools and even kindergartens can invite exchange students from AIU to come and visit their schools. The cute little dog is AIU's mascot "One".皆さんは、大仙市と国際教養大学（AIU）の提携プログラムをご存知ですか？中学校、小学校、そして幼稚園までが、ＡＩＵの留学生を学校に招いて、生徒や児童と交流してもらうという素晴らしい事業です。左のかわいい子犬はＡＩＵのマスコット「ワン(One)」です。
It's a real thrill for the kids, a cultural gold mine for the exchange students, suprisingly fun for the teachers, and a big boost for the international exchange culture of Daisen. You can read more about the program either on the Daisen website or on Eunyoung's blog.
子どもたちがワクワクするし、留学生にとって貴重な文化体験になるし、先生方も意外と楽しんでいるし、そして大仙市の国際交流に多いに貢献しています。さらに詳しいことは、大仙市のホームページ、またはウニョンさんのブログをご覧ください。
Lately many schools have been inviting students to events like Potato digging, or Nabe picnics or Rice harvesting. But today I want to show you how another school, Takanashi elementary, is pursuing international understanding from a different avenue.
最近、たくさんの学校さんはＡＩＵの留学生を芋掘り、なべっこ、稲刈りなど様々なイベントに呼んでいます。しかし、今日は、ちょっと違う切り口から国際交流に取り組んでいる学校、高梨小学校を見せたいと思います。
(From the left 左から: Kofi, Pieda, Paul)On the 12th of November, Takanashi elementary had their first "International Day". They called on three international friends of Takanashi principal Ms. Suda to come to the school and talk to the kids about their countries - Kofi from Ghana, Paul from Papua New Guinea, and Pieda from Columbia. Kofi and Paul are students at Akita University, while Pieda has been living in Akita for close to 10 years and is an "A'la Culture Supporter" with the Akita International Association.
１１月１２日に、高梨小が初の「インターナショナル・デイ」を行いました。須田校長先生の知人である３人の外国人を学校に招いて、自国の紹介をしてもらいました。３人は、ガーナからのコフィさん、パプアニューギニアからのポールさん、そしてコロンビアからのピエダさん。コフィさんとポールさんは秋田大学に在学中で、ピエダさんは１０年間ぐらい秋田に住み、秋田国際交流協会で「アラカルチャー・サポーター」として活躍しています。
(The kids thanking their guests - お客さんに挨拶する子ども)The kids were very excited to meet people from such "exotic" countries that they knew almost nothing about. It was a bit of a change from the usual American/British/Canadian english speakers, and everyone was itching to see just what they would each talk about. And of course I was just as excited because I'd never met anyone from Ghana or Columbia before!
子どもたちは、ほとんど聞いたこともない国からの人に会えることでとてもワクワクしていました。いつものアメリカ、英国、カナだなどの英語圏のお客さんと少し違って、どんな話をするんだろうと皆で楽しみにしていました。そして、僕自身もガーナ人とコロンビア人に会ったことがなかったので、皆に負けないぐらいワクワクしていました。
I went with Paul to hear him talk to the grade 1-2 kids, then the 3-4 kids and then the 5-6 kids. He showed pictures of villages back in Papua New Guinea, and all of the kids were amazed by the toys the villages kids played with. Japanese children are used to playing with Playstations or Nintendo games, but of course in the villages there is no electricity, so no video games! The kids make their own toys from trees and plants. Paul showed a boy that had carved a toy helicopter out of fruit!
僕はポールさんのところで、１・２年生、３・４年生、そして５・６年生にむけてのプレゼンテーションを聞きました。パプアニューギニアの村の写真を生徒に見せると、村の子どもたちが遊ぶおもちゃに皆が唖然としました。日本人の子どもはプレーステーションや任天堂などで遊びますが、村には電線が通っていないのでテレビゲームはもちろんない！子どもたちは、木や植物を使って自分でおもちゃを作るそうです。ポールさんの写真で、果物でおもちゃのヘリコプターを作った男の子もいました！
(We also had question time after Paul's speech - スピーチの後は楽しい質問タイムでした）There were so many differences in life between Japan and Papua New Guinea, so I think it was a very eye opening experience for the children. There were simple everyday differences such as how many villagers didn't wear shoes, or how people rode in the backs of utes to get places. And there were larger differences, such as the number of different languages in the country, as opposed to the one language spoken in Japan. Even the scenery and landscape were radically different to Japan. I listened to Paul's speeches three times in a row and I still found it fascinating, whereas all the students listened to three completely different speakers from three completely different cultures. Talk about broadening your horizons!
日本とパプアニューギニアの生活様式の違いは数え切れないほどあって、子どもたちにとってびっくり発見が多かったと思います。村の人たちが靴をはかないとか、移動の時に軽トラックの後ろトレイに乗るとか、日常生活の簡単な違いがありました。そして、もっと大きな違いもありました。日本では一つの言語しかないのに（秋田弁を別として・・・）パプアニューギニアでは驚くほど言語がたくさんあります。そして、風景や景色も日本のとまったく違います。僕はポールさんの話を連続で３回聞いたのに、３回とも面白くて仕方なかったのです。しかし、生徒のみんなは立て続けに、まったく違う文化から来たまったく違う３人の話を立て続けに聞くことができました。一気に世界が広がったでしょうね！
It was a fascinating experience for the kids to get a glimpse into faraway cultures and to see how interesting the world outside Akita, outside Japan can be. If it inspires any of them to get out and explore the world then that is great.
But it was also a chance to show the kids the foreign people that are making a living in Akita, their own backyard. A chance for the teachers and children alike to see that if you search them out, it's possible to hear about other cultures and meet interesting people without even leaving the prefecture.
In fact, I think that the teachers might have enjoyed the International Day even more than the students! Everyone was buzzing for a long time after the guests had left. And maybe that's the way it should be. If the teachers don't enjoy it then how can the kids? I'm looking forward to the next International Day at Takanashi, and hopefully seeing more days like this at other schools too!
高梨小の子どもたちにとっては、秋田から、そして日本から遠く離れている国々の文化を覗き込み、「世界ってこんなにおもしろいんだ！」と思わせる貴重で面白い体験だったと思います。それに感化されて、世界を探検したいという気持ちになれば、嬉しいです。
そして、秋田県に暮らして生計を立てている外国人の姿を見るいい機会でした。ちょっと探せば、秋田県から出なくてもいろいろな人に会えるし、いろいろな文化に触れられるということがわかりました。
どちらかというと、生徒よりも先生方のほうがInternational Dayを楽しんでいたのかもしれません。お客さんが帰った後も、職員室で話が絶えませんでした。それがいいかもしれません。だって、先生方がつまらなければ、子どもだって楽しいはずがないです。高梨小の第２のInternational Dayを楽しみにしながら、ほかの学校さんがこのような企画をすることを願っています。
